In this episode I talk to Joseph Yu and Caroline Penick about the topic of worship. Joseph is a friend of mine from our Louisville, KY days and he’s currently the worship pastor of Gospel Life Church in Sunrise, Florida. Caroline is a college friend, and she’s the wife of a college campus minister and mom of four in Fayetteville, AR. Her husband Cole was on Episode 1 of the podcast.
We talk about what worship is and what it isn’t. We discuss if there are right and wrong ways to worship. I think you’ll really be refreshed by this conversation. It will get you thinking about your own attitude when you approach God’s throne to worship.
What is worship? - “One’s response to something or someone of giving praise, devotion, and adoration." "When you worship something, you in some way orient your life around it." "We need to think of worship as more than specific rituals, we need to think your whole life is worship."
Misconceptions about worship - “Sometimes we leave out the Word portion...those words should then inform our worship; those should be the truths that we worship from." "People think that worship is something you turn on, like you flip it. What that means is it’s really temporary…what do you do with the rest of your 9-5, Monday through Saturday?" "Another misconception about worship is that worship is just a mere emotional experience." "[Another misconception] is that it’s going to leave you with a positive feeling…We expect it to be like a spiritual pep rally…In truth there are going to be times that we are deeply convicted."
Worship in our everyday lives, specifically in motherhood - "I know as a mom, and as a keeper of the home, I image my creator when I bring order from chaos." "I’m bringing Him glory by the small tasks that I’m doing and doing them faithfully."
Right and wrong ways to worship - It's mostly about attitude. "You’re not the center of the universe…It’s not about you."
Living in unity in spite of different views on worship - "It’s important that whatever we’re singing is rooted in truth, and like, good, deep theological truth." "Biblical worship is not about style of music. But it’s about knowing God, responding to who God is."
What do we do with questionable lyrics - Keep in mind the intention behind the song. Compare all songs to the truths of Scripture. "There should be room for poetic license and creativity, but at the same time we don’t want to sacrifice truth, or intentionality of the service or intentionality of the communication of truth on the altar of creativity."
How can we encourage our worship paster? - Worship!
How worship relates to the gospel - Worship is our response to the truth of the gospel.
